Modern life would simply not be where it is without the invention of glass. From the glass used in greenhouses that allowed us to cultivate fruit and vegetables in temperate climates, to the glass lenses in the telescopes that first allowed us to explore beyond the realms of our solar system.
The first hollow containers made of glass were made in around 1500BC, but the art of making clear glass through glass blowing wasn’t discovered until 1AD, and even then was kept a closely guarded secret until the fall of the Roman Empire.
What is Glass?
Glass is what is known as an amorphous solid, which is a solid that possesses many of the properties of liquid, and this is what gives the material its desirable transparent quality. It’s made by heating up a number of ingredients, primarily silica, to temperatures of around 1500 degrees. This molten glass is then gathered around the end of a hollow tube, much like treacle on a spoon. This is placed inside a mould and air is then blown through the tube, creating a bubble of glass which fits to the required shape.
What is Corrosion?
Unfortunately, over time repeated exposure to hot water and detergent removes microscopic molecules of glass. This leaves holes and uneven patches on the surface that causes the light shining through the glass to bounce around, rather than pass straight through. This makes the glass look dull and cloudy.
How can it be prevented?
Your glasses’ perfect shine can easily be protected, firstly by making sure that you load the dishwasher correctly, with no glasses touching. As the dishwasher runs, the items in it will move around, and if glasses are allowed to knock together, tiny chips and cracks can form. The next thing you can do is make sure that you’re using dishwasher detergent for preventing glass cloudiness, all the while getting that perfect clean.
Finish Quantum Max tackles this corrosive process, added protection against glass corrosion. It uses a unique patented technology, which works as a protective shield, helping extend the life of the glass. There are key times during the wash that glasses are at most risk, so it is useful to combine the shine and protect power of the detergent with shine and protect rinse aid, which will protect from corrosion, but also from other factors that can compromise the gleaming clean, like water spots.
