How to load a dishwasher
Generally, it’s best to put larger items on the bottom rack, and cups, glasses and less dirty things on the top rack. But look at the dishwasher manual to see what the manufacturer advises, too.
Stacking the dishwasher well means everything gets washed thoroughly. So don’t put dishes inside each other, and make sure cups, glasses and pots are upside down. Put anything with a deep base at an angle, so water can drain off.
Which products go where?
The dispensers for the detergent and rinse aid are normally inside the door. You can usually adjust how much rinse aid the machine uses, and an indicator shows when it’s time to top it up.
In most machines the reservoir for dishwasher salt is under the lower rack. If there’s no indicator showing when it needs more salt, check at least once a month.
Which dishwasher program to use
- Regular or eco: for large loads. Eco uses less water and energy
- Auto: sensors adjust the program length and temperature to suit each load
- Intensive/power scrub: great for baked- or dried-on food
- Quick: for less-dirty dishes
- Delicate/glass/gentle: a lower temperature for gentle cleaning
- Half load: if you don’t want to wait until the machine’s full
